Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall administrative operation of the lab- including equipment inventory, purchase lab equipment and lab/field supplies, scheduling of lab staff, coordinating between field staff and the lab.

Smith-Emery Laboratories is seeking a Civil Engineer preferably EIT, knowledgeable in construction materials testing (CMT), to support the Structural and Tile Testing Department  in Los Angeles Laboratory .

Job Summary / Duties

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the Laboratory Director.  Under the Supervision, direction and training of the Laboratory Director, essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Respond to RFPs, review technical documents for testing requirements, research testing protocols.
  • Perform static and dynamic testing of structural systems and components.
  • Perform materials laboratory testing conforming to stringent test procedures
  • Perform lab facility testing for equipment maintenance, replacement, calibrations, and upgrading.
  • Reading plans and specifications to ensure proper testing requirements and standards.
  • Design testing apparatus when required.
  • Write testing procedures (when applicable).
  • Oversee fabrication of test specimen if needed.
  • Conduct data processing and results analysis.
  • Prepare engineering and test  reports providing technical consultation to clients.
  • Perform other miscellaneous engineering duties as required and assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • Must currently possess a Bachelor's or Master's of Science degree from an accredited course of study in Civil, Structural, or Materials engineering, preferably holding the EIT license.
  • Must be well-versed in Microsoft Office basics i.e. Outlook Word and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficient in computer programing training will be provided on Delta System RMC Controller.
  • Knowledge in Ceramic, Clay products, a plus.
  • Must be able to lift 60 plus pounds and work in varying extreme weather conditions.

Projects include, but are not limited to, DSA Projects, OSHPD Projects, Residential Developments, Public Works Projects (i.e. Metro Authority, Caltrans, Port of Long Beach) etc. The successful candidate will not only be responsible for the technical component of the job but will have involvement with the continued strategic planning and marketing for the department.

Job Summary / Duties

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the Laboratory Director. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

(Training will be provided) 

  • Ground Penetrating Radar – Using special equipment to scan for reinforcing.  Location of investigation may be in tight space as crawl space and/or high elevation as on scissor or boom lift.
  • Adhesion Test – Preparing and testing for concrete, fiber wrap, fire proofing, other bonding material on original surface.
  • Skid Test – Static Coefficient of Friction (50 lbs. weight is used) & Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (est. 15 lbs. Digital Tribometer used) to test friction of walkway.
  • Proof Load Test – Ability to calculate calibrated formula for load and perform test.
  • Floor Flatness – Floor profile test using special equipment doing basic calculations and measurements.  Locate and mark testing runs on floor plan.  
  • When required in the Laboratory   the person will need to  assist in  repeated  material testing, preparing testing specimens, cleaning equipment, etc.… 

Required Abilities

  • Basic physical ability to lift (30 ~40 lbs.), walk, crawl and climb ladder
  • Able to kneel on a pad to scan large floor areas
  • Able to climb on a Scaffold, aerial lift, tight and closed space, and/or awkward position like reaching out of an elevated slab.
  • Able to work in Construction Environment – Safety required.
  • Excellent abilities to read, write daily reports, and do basic math calculations.

Position Summary:

Duties includes performing field and plant inspections during the production and placement of asphalt concrete, Portland cement concrete, and other construction related material such as oil binder, aggregates, cements, and admixtures. Inspectors will also visit quarries and mine pits to witness material source sampling, stockpiling and testing samples of binders, cement admixtures and other related materials.

Skills & Abilities:

Duties includes performing field and plant inspections during the production and placement of asphalt concrete, Portland cement concrete, and other construction related material such as oil binder, aggregates, cements, and admixtures. Inspectors will also visit quarries and mine pits to witness material source sampling, stockpiling and testing samples of binders, cement admixtures and other related materials.

  • Have knowledge on the placement, sampling, and testing of materials used in state transportation projects or material testing requirements and QA/QC frequencies as they relate to Caltrans Special Provisions, Standard Specifications, and Construction Manual.
  • Have the ability to interpret material test data, provide analytical determination of material acceptability, and visually recognize basic material properties throughout production and placement.
  • Have the ability to prepare material inspection and testing reports and back up calculations.
  • Can work independently, make clear recommendations, prepare concise reports/documentation, and work constructively with others.
  • Familiar with weighing and batching equipment.

Minimum Competencies:

  • 4 years of current experience in the inspection, sampling and testing of materials used on state transportation projects.
  • Possess current California Test Method certifications for materials typically utilized in state transportation projects that may include but not be limited to: CTM 105, CTM125, CTM201, CTM 202, CTM205, CTM216, CTM217, CTM226, CTM227, CTM231, CTM229, CTM308, CTM309, CTM370, CTM382, CTM523, CTM524
  • AASHTO - T11, T27, T166, T176, T209, T248, T255, T269, T275, T308, T329, T335, and R47 preferred but not required
  • ACI Field – Grade 1 certification required and ACI Aggregate – Grade 1 certifications preferred.
  • Certified in radiation safety and have experience performing compaction with a Nuclear Gauge
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license.
  • Have the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
