Smith-Emery continues to grow, and as a result we have opened a new position for a Civil Engineer to assist with our Caltrans Southern Regional Lab (SRL) contract and grow into being a key member of our Anaheim lab operations and company overall. Projects include, but are not limited to, DSA Projects, OSHPD Projects, Residential Developments, Public Works Projects (i.e. Metro Authority, Caltrans, Port of Long Beach) etc. The successful candidate will not only be responsible for the technical component of the job but will have involvement with the continued strategic planning and marketing for the department.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Project Management
- Direct, review, and monitor work performed by material testing personnel
- Oversee, coordinate, and schedule material testing personnel
- Assign and match material testing personnel to specific tasks and expertise
- Review laboratory test reports
- Review plans and specs to determine testing requirements
- Review concrete mix designs and asphalt Job Mix Formulas (JMFs) for roadway construction and compliance with Caltrans specifications
Job Qualifications:
- BS in Civil Engineering
- California PE license is required
- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of Caltrans organization, standards, and project special provisions
- Experience with Caltrans, AASHTO, and ASTM test methods pertaining to roadway construction materials including HMA, aggregate, soils, and concrete
- Experience reviewing concrete mix designs and asphalt Job Mix Formulas (JMFs) for general roadway construction and compliance with Caltrans specifications
- Experience overseeing materials testing and inspections
- Background in quality management
- Thorough understanding of accreditation policies for all relevant agencies including Caltrans, DSA, AASHTO re:source, CCRL, IAS, etc.
- Proficiency in computer applications including MS Office
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
