Los Angeles County and University of Southern California Public Medical Center
Los Angeles, California
Description
The LAC+USC Center is one of the largest public hospitals and teaching centers in the United States. The new 600-bed, 1,500,000-square-foot project consists of four major structures: a seven-story, 334,000-square-foot outpatient building; an eight-story, 681,000-square-foot inpatient tower; a five-story, 430,000-square-foot diagnostic and treatment building; and a 33,000-square-foot central energy plant. Smith-Emery provided special inspection and testing for the facilities under OSHPD auspices, and our ASNT III certified engineers provided critical assessments on the project. The primary exterior building enclosure is precast concrete panels, a glazed curtain wall system with metal panels, and a built-up roof. The diagnostic and treatment building was designed with a seismic base-isolation system beneath its entire 76,650-square-foot base that can accommodate 22-inches of movement.
